My University Days: Part 2 ("TATENOKAWA" Newspaper 10/09/2012)

The fermentation faculty of Tokyo University of Agriculture has a campus in Kyodo, Setagaya, which is located only a walk away from Chitose Funabashi on the Odakyu line so I rented an apartment there. The rent, as I remember it, was about 63000 Japanese yen a month and the apartment was located really close to the nearest train station, only a minute away on foot.

The Odakyu has since undergone a lengthy construction and now runs over a viaduct, but back then it wasn’t uncommon to have to wait 5 minutes at a level crossing. To a country boy who had never lived in Tokyo before, everything was uncommon, to the extent that I even remember being taken aback by the hustle and bustle of the shopping arcades.

At the university entrance orientation, I made a friend who I am still good friends with now and have the sort of friendship where you perform the radish dance at each other’s wedding, and because my apartment was located so close to school, drinking parties at my place were a regular occurrence. When I say drink, we didn’t actually drink sake but we had other alcohol drinks like beer and chuhai (canned alcoholic cocktail drink). (laughs)
